Critical Thoughts from the Past, Present and Across the Waters

We’re happy to carry two longer pieces for your perusal and criticism. In the case of the first article, ‘Stuttering Steps in Political Education’, taken from the Spring 1981 edition of the magazine, ‘Schooling and Culture’, we’re pleased as it marks finally our commitment to unearthing interesting material from the past – go to the new Critical Offerings from the Past page for further background.

Secondly we’re delighted to post on the Contemporary Critical Thoughts page a stimulating presentation given by Conor Rowley, Assessor of Youth Work within the Department of Education and Science, across the waters in Ireland. In an articulate revisiting of the where, who, what and how of youth work,  he explores how youth work might be positioned in a way that is active, ethical and true to its principles. He summarise his argument in three sentences:

  1. Youth work should neither apologise for, nor abnegate its core function – but rather define it;

  2. Such definition and articulation should be fluent, yet measured. Youth work should speak well of itself, for itself – outlining a well-informed practice;

and finally;

3.    Youth work as a practice should ultimately develop to a position where it requires less and  less              mediation on its behalf – to one which has clear status on the educational continuum.
