Heretical and imaginative debate about Youth and Community

Radical Social [and Youth Work] 35 Years On!

ADVANCE NOTICE from Michael Lavalette, Associate Professor of Social Work, Liverpool Hope University.

I’m writing to let you know about a major conference that is being held at Liverpool Hope University on 3 February 2010. The one-day conference is to mark the 35th anniversary of the publication of the seminal text Radical Social Work by Roy Bailey and Mike Brake. We are delighted to announce that Roy Bailey has agreed to open the conference – the first time he has taken part in an event like this for almost 20 years.
The conference is aimed at social work academics, practitioners and students – and those with an interest in more critical forms of social care, youth and community work.
We have deliberately kept the price low to encourage practitioners and students to participate. The cost (£30 for academics, £25 for practitioners, £18 for students) includes two teas/coffees and a three course lunch.
There is a leaflet pdf attached. Could I ask you to distribute this widely to those who may be interested?
The conference will be made up of a combination of ‘plenary sessions’ and an ‘open stream’.
In the plenary sessions we have a fantastic range of speakers, including Chris Jones, Peter Beresford, Sarah Banks, Iain Ferguson, Mary Langan, Charlotte Williams, Laura Penketh and Mark Baldwin.
At present we have a ‘call for papers’ for those interested in contributing to the open stream, with a closing date of 1/12/09. Details of the kinds of topics that would fit into this section of the conference are given on our dedicated conference website at www.hope.ac.uk/radicalsocialwork.
I hope you can manage to the conference – and, as I said, I’d be very grateful if you could distribute this email and the attached pdf leaflet to anyone you think might be interested.

In February 2009 we said our aim was to deliver a lively and stimulating blog at the beginning of each month, featuring a mix of commentary, analysis and gossip. However from late April we're going to revert to a more typical Blog formula of putting up posts as inspiration arrives! Longer articles will be placed on the Contemporary page, whilst a separate page will be devoted to critical reprints from the past. So don't forget to pay us a visit on a regular basis.
